Your Child's Dental Health

Child brushing their teethHealthy adult teeth start at a young age. Thanks to interceptive strategies and preventative care techniques, your child can enjoy a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. But it starts with early care before all of your child’s teeth have come in.

Protecting Cavity-Prone Areas

Fissure sealants are a fast and easy solution for blocking out the bacteria that cause cavities. We place them in the deep grooves and pits of permanent molars (the chewing teeth towards the back of your mouth) as soon as they come in. For most children, this is around ages 6 and 12, respectively.

Forming Smart Habits Early

Dietary choices and oral hygiene techniques are some of the first things a child needs to learn to protect their teeth. From how to hold a toothbrush to getting plenty of water to drink, the habits your family forms today will affect your child’s smile for decades to come.

Prepping for a First-Time Appointment

If you wait until a child is a little older for their first dental visit, they may exhibit some anxiety or fear. To minimize the risk for dental phobia, play “dentist” at home prior to your child’s appointment. Have them take turns counting family member’s teeth and lay back in your lap as you use a flashlight to look into their mouth.

Be sure to use positive language when you talk about the dentist. Avoid using words like “afraid”, “shot”, or “hurt” even if you’re using them in a positive context.

Most paediatric experts recommend children see a dentist by their first birthday.

What if My Child Needs Treatment?

Baby teeth can decay at alarmingly fast rates compared to adult ones. If a cavity is noted, it’s best to treat it quickly. Otherwise the decay may spread or premature tooth loss could alter your child’s orofacial development.

Access CDBS Coverage

Does your family qualify for Medicare? If so, your children (between the ages of 2-17) may be entitled in up to $1000 in dental services every two years. That coverage includes reimbursements for cleans, fillings, sealants, crowns, orthodontics and more. If you’re not sure your child is eligible, we can help you find out.
